COURSE DESCRIPTION
The development and everyday applications of digital mapping technologies and spatial analysis have become ubiquitous, from news presented through satellite maps to virtual tours, traffic and domestic navigation systems, and digital and interactive maps sharing information. Within this context, this course will address how social sciences, and in particular anthropologists and archaeologists, can take advantage of these technologies, and at the same time, discuss the criticisms, responsibilities, and ethical considerations related to spatial data sharing and collection methods. Additionally, students will prepare and virtually present digital materials related to their research through the creative applications of digital mapping tools to store, analyze, present, and share students’ research.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students will learn the basics of Geographic Information Systems through the ESRI suite. Additionally, students will be able to reflect and discuss current issues in digital mapping and its applications to archaeology and anthropology.
